How RAP Payments Are Calculated
Unlike traditional income-driven plans that use discretionary income, RAP applies a straightforward percentage directly to your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). The percentage increases as your income rises through 11 brackets, from a flat $10/month minimum for the lowest earners up to 10% of AGI for those earning above $100,000.
Each qualifying dependent reduces your monthly payment by $50. If the calculated payment falls below $10, you pay the $10/month minimum. This simple structure makes it easy to predict your payment without complex formulas involving the Federal Poverty Level.
After 30 years of qualifying payments, any remaining balance is forgiven. RAP payments also count toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), which offers forgiveness after just 10 years of service at a qualifying employer.
